Lookup Site Column

A lookup column functions like the Choice type with the difference that a lookup determines the choices dynamically by presenting the values returned from another list on the same site.

To configure a lookup site column, enter a name in the Column name textbox and complete the common properties. Then complete the additional column settings unique to this type of column.

Additional Column Settings unique to a lookup column:

  1. Source List – select a source list in the Get information from menu. This identifies the list or library containing the items to be used as choices.
  2. Source Column – select a source column from the In this column menu that will provide the choice values.
  3. Allow Multiple Values determines how the choice will be presented to the user. Allowing multiple values displays the choices in a selection wizard. Not allowing multiples presents the choices in a drop down box containing all choices and a None option.
  4. Allow unlimited length in document libraries presents a wider textbox for longer selections.
  5. Additional Fields allows the user to select other columns from the Source List. The additional fields will be displayed in the Views and on the View Item window.
