Manage the Permissions for a SharePoint Group

Management of the permissions for a SharePoint group is dependent on whether the user or group resides on a root site, inheriting subsite or a subsite with unique permissions.

  • Permissions for a SharePoint group should always be managed from the root site for all sites that inherit from the root site.
  • Permissions for a group on a site that does not inherit from the root site should be managed from that subsite.

To manage the permissions for a SharePoint Group:

  1. Navigate to the root site or the subsite having unique permissions where you have administrative privileges.
  2. On the site’s home page select Site Permissions from the “Site Actions” menu.
  3. Click on the checkbox next to the name of the group. The Modify group on the Permission Tools – Edit ribbon will be activated.

    To Edit the Permissions:

    • Select the “Edit User Permissions” icon from the Modify group on the Edit ribbon.
    • On the Edit Permissions window modify the permissions by selecting or de-selecting the permissions levels.
    • Click on the "OK" button to save the modifications.

    To Delete Permissions:

    • Select the “Remove User Permissions” icon from the Modify group on the Edit ribbon.
    • On the message dialog, click on the "OK" button to confirm the deletion.
