Extended Desktops

You can create hierarchies of desktop formats and inherit settings that should apply globally.

You then only need to define a small subset of changes to the format for individual departments or users.

To define a desktop as an extended desktop:

  1. Select Extras > Define Desktop from the menu.
  2. Load the desired desktop format.
  3. Enable the Extended Desktop check box.

  4. You have the following options:
    • If you enable only the Extended desktop check box, the extended desktop inherits settings based on where the desktop is assigned. Extended desktops defined for login roles inherit the settings defined for the rep; extended desktops defined for reps inherit the group desktop settings; extend group desktops inherit the station desktop settings.

Settings in desktops assigned to roles are inherited according to the priority entered in the login role.

    • Enable the Extended Desktop option and select a desktop in the Fixed parent desktop field to define the current desktop as a child of the selected desktop.
    • Click on (Load parent desktops) to load and edit the parent desktop's settings.

    • Click on (View) to display a print preview of the desktop format:

  5. The Inherit configuration check box is displayed in the windows in the desktop settings and is enabled by default.

The settings in the parent desktop are applied to the extended desktop.

Note: The Inherit configuration check box is not present in the Icon Bar Properties window. The names of levels, workflows and dashboards in the child desktop are used. If no name has been defined for an element, the name is applied from the parent desktop.
Note: The global interface settings are not inherited, see Configuring the User Interface. The interface format defined in the current desktop is always used.
  6. Disable the Inherit configuration check box and make the desired settings.

If you enable the Inherit configuration check box on the Links and Context Menu tabs in the level properties, the Group links or Group menus check box is displayed. Enable the check box to combine the links and context menu options in both the parent and current desktop, instead of only applying those defined in the child desktop.

The type, format and level are compared for context menu entries; the link type, source and target info areas are compared for links. If duplicate entries exist, the entry defined for the current desktop is used.

Example: The current desktop contains a context menu entry of the type Level, which is only displayed in view mode, see Context Menu Tab (Mode > View). The same context menu entry is active in the parent desktop in display, new and edit mode.

In this case, the current desktop's settings are applied, and the entry is only displayed in view mode.

  7. Save the desktop format.
  8. Click on OK.
