Mail server coexistence
Most users install Aurea List Manager on a machine separate from their mail server. If necessary, a DNS Bypass is created, so Aurea List Manager can send mails properly to the mail server. For more information, see Summary of dnsbypass_fields for ListManager.
It is recommended to use a machine that is not running a mail server and install Aurea List Manager on it. Most mail server companies never planned coexistence as a need and consequently made it impossible for Aurea List Manager to work with them.
The issue is that your mail server wants to receive all the mail sent to your machine, and thus Aurea List Manager never gets a chance to see its mail.
Three techniques used to implement Aurea List Manager Mail server coexistence
Assign mail server and Aurea List Manager different IP Addresses
- If your machine has more than one TCP/IP address. The mail server can use one IP address then Aurea List Manager can coexist on one (or multiple) TCP/IP addresses.
- The Aurea List Manager IP addresses can be set in Utilities > Administration > Server > Server Settings > Machine Settings.
Mail server forwards mail to Aurea List Manager
- Aurea List Manager can be configured to receive mail on a different port (
port 26
is common) and then configure your mail server to forward mail on to Aurea List Manager running on a different port. - This can be set up using an alias for your machine (by adding a DNS 'A' RECORD) and informing the mail server that mail received for this address should be forwarded to Aurea List Manager, which is running on a different port.
- Aurea List Manager port setting can be setup in Utilities > Administration > Server > Server Settings > Network Settings.
Aurea List Manager forwards mail to a mail server
- Your mail server can be configured to use another port, let Aurea List Manager answer mail on
port 25
, and inform it to forward non-Aurea List Manager mail on to your mail server that is running on an alternate port. - To instruct Aurea List Manager to forward non-Aurea List Manager mail, specify the IP address and port of your mail server in Utilities > Administration > Server > Server Settings > Network Settings.
