Installing and running as non-root

We strongly recommend that Aurea List Manager is run as root during the Linux installation. Normally, Aurea List Manager runs as root to have access to the ports, and network files only root has access to (For example, SMTP on 25).

However, if you want to install and run Aurea List Manager with a user other than root, run the installer as the user who should own Aurea List Manager. The installer will warn you against doing so, and inform you that the standard ports Aurea List Manager uses will be moved as follows:

  • Tcl Webserver: 1080
  • SMTP: 1025
  • NNTP: 1119

For others to access Aurea List Manager, you will need to route traffic that normally would come to Aurea List Manager on ports 80, 25, and 119 to the ports specified for your Aurea List Manager installation.
